The Annexation of Somalia

Annex Somalia?  What an interesting idea!  Mr. Kipkoris may have been trying to be humorous, or he may have been hallucinating.  But in either case, the idea is audacious as it is original!

Some in Washington and, particularly the clique in the Council on Foreign Relations  may welcome this idea, and may be even tempted to publish it on the Foreign Policy magazine.  The Neocon think tanks and AIPAC activists may embrace it as a bold initiative akin to the famed X article by George F. Kennan, the architect of the successful containment policy against the former USSR, a policy that in the end led to the demise of the Soviet Empire.  Since the Neocons usually see the world through the lenses of Israel’s interests, and since they know Messrs Kibaki and Zenawi are slaves of the American handouts, the influential neocons may see the expansion of these two countries into Somalia as an expansion of Israel’s sphere of influence.

But there is one problem:  invading Somalia is really easy.  But extricating oneself without getting burned is nearly impossible!  I am Somali.  And contrary to the general believe I support this idea for the sole reason of knowing it is the easiest and the shortest way of destroying both Kenya and Ethiopia and the reconstitution of the Somali Nation.

In 1977 Ethiopia was crumbling and was falling apart.  Then Somalia invaded it.  That invasion turned out to be a God sent miracle for the survival of Ethiopia, because aside from the huge support from the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, the invasion unified the Ethiopian people and solidified their resolve.  Today, after more than 17 years of reconciliation failures, a reconciliation that was, ironically, led by none other Kenya and Ethiopia, a general invasion from outsiders, Kenya and Ethiopia, is perhaps just the medicine that the Somali people need, in order to set aside our differences, and fight a common enemy.

Having said that, for the Horn of Africa to become peaceful and stable, annexation is not only inevitable, but, in my view, unavoidable.  But contrary to what Kipkoris expects, it is the Somalis that eventually will annex both Kenya and Ethiopia!

I do not want to demean our Kenyan brothers and sisters, but much can be gleaned from people’s attitudes and their believe in their self-worth.  Since Mr. Kipkoris took shots at the expense of the Somali people, I cannot help but remind him a historic event that he needs to remember every time he thinks about the Somalis:  In 1977 when the Somali National Army overrun Ethiopia and liberated over 95%Ogaden (Somaligalbeed) in a speed akin to  that of the German army crossing Maginot, Somali women held a major conference in their headquarters just across Mogadishu’s national theatre.  At the end of the conference, the women presented one proposal to the Somali government and its leadership: “Mr. President” they said to then General Mohamed Siad Barre, “our national army dealt with Ethiopia effectively.  And as for Kenya, just leave it to us, the women!”

Now if Kibaki and Zenawi have the stomach to entertain Kipkoris’ bluff, well, the ball is in their court!
