Obama Ensemble or Bush Quartet?
By Dr Terry Lacey
Feb 03 , 2009

When we think of the European Union and Palestine does it bring to mind the stirring chords of Beethoven’s Fifth or the sad chorus of Handle’s Messiah,“ All we like sheep, have gone
astray ” ?

Contrasting comments on Palestine by ex Presidents Carter (talk with Hamas) and Clinton (the blockade of Gaza is an atrocity) and President Obama, (the boundaries of Palestine should be contiguous) with those of the EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel in Gaza last week (you are all terrorists and its all your own fault), one might conclude the US is changing its tune with the Obama Ensemble, while Europe remains in harmony with the Bush Quartet.

Nothing to do with Beethoven and Adolf Busch, who had a much better Quartet.

Louis Michel´s comments last week to the bombed and blasted people of Gaza, will go down in history as a bad case of a broken bakelite gramophone record scratching out an old song, when it would have been much better to throw it at an Israeli tank.

What he said to his bemused escorts as they toured the extensive rubble of civil infrastructure, while contemplating the 70% unemployment arising from the EU-supported 18-month blockade of the Gaza Strip, was that the terrorists only had themselves to blame.

If they had only got on their knees and kissed the EU posterior, along with those of the Bush Quartet, then this disaster, might not have happened.

Surrounded by fierce terrorists Louis Michel did not think of his own safety, or lunch, but said, “At this time we have to also recall the overwhelming responsibility of Hamas… I intentionally say this here – Hamas is a terrorist movement and it has to be denounced as such.” (Jakarta Post 27.1).

His next statement showed he knew that his political trousers had fallen down and that he was covered only by a cigarette packet (Camels of course) :-

“In order for the EU to relaunch a political dialogue with a minimal chance of succeeding and a chance of moving towards peace, Hamas must accept the two little conditions that were put to it – one, the right of Israel to exist and two that it abandon the armed struggle.”

If you accept our conditions when we say, then we may be nicer to you (if we can persuade the Israelis to let us do so).

Just to make sure they understood he continued, “One cannot hold discussions with a terrorist movement, which uses terrorism as a means, “

When my first father-in-law was a gunner in the British Army of Egypt, passing through Gaza with General Allenby, advancing parallel to Lawrence of Arabia, he got tinnitus and went deaf because of all the bangs. Louis Michel in his visit to Gaza probably concluded these terrorists had gone deaf from too many explosions, so it was best to keep repeating things.

One detected an almost wistful hope, despite everything, like two lovers who had parted, but there was still a chance…..

“Despite everything my darling, perhaps I treated you badly. Your behavior has been reprehensible, firing rockets, shooting at people, settling scores and being too bossy. However, I ignored that a majority voted for you. I got together with the family, your father-in-law and the neighbors from hell to cut off your inheritance and reduced you to poverty. I supported your illegitimate brother to take your hillside residence.  I took sides in the family row over your life style and backed your father-in-law when he tried to knock sense into you. I didn’t realize you would knock him out. And now this last fracas is over, I can see that you lost a bit in the fighting, but won a bit politically. But lets put all this behind us.”

“My darling, all the same, could’nt we get together again so that you could try just one more time to kiss my posterior?”

But she has apparently remained quite contrite. Why should she give him her favors, before he has shown her the benefits of his munificence ?
