The president elect: Dr Faroole and the journey of
a million miles

As a keen Puntlander, it was natural that friends and neighbours call me for an update on its politics. These calls peaked as the countdown to elections approached. People were mainly interested in who is who, precisely who belonged to what clan and also my predictions. They were really cynical, a trait that became synonymous to us as a nation, when I replied by saying that his clan identity would not add any value, therefore it was unreasonable for me to worry about it.

Though we all have our favourites, it was really difficult to predict where the winnings will fall, because the 9 candidates in the final rounds were very competent men, who shared our longing for a lasting change. I patiently watched along with the world as Puntland spoke. Dr Faroole was elected as the successor to former president Gen. Cadde. I then went on to the internet in search for information about our own doctor. I came across one of those articles who repeated the Nugaal region in relation to Dr Faroole enough times to be able to understand what was being insinuated here. I would like to emphasise in response, that if he is from Nugaal, then yes Nugaal has indeed produced the best man to rule Puntland. As though the 8th of January 2009, he was elected collectively by the honourable people of Puntland, and as such belongs to and is accountable to Puntland including Nugaal. His successes will be shared by all of us, and his failures will be only his. He has been chosen by the people for the people and I, along with my fellow Puntlanders, promise to rally behind him, to support him in achieving our overall goal, to encourage him when he is right and tell him when things are not going according to plan.
The smooth and admirable manner by which the election was carried out shows what we, as people can achieve with the spirit of togetherness. Puntland is a rich region with its human before its environmental resources. Determined yet patient, knowledgeable yet humble, ambitious yet believe in self reliance. The journey of a million miles just started with this gigantic step and together we have to show the world that YES WE CAN.
Several agencies contributed to making Puntland’s election the success it was. The role of (Isimada) in overseeing safe and fair election cannot be overlooked. They have proven their skilfulness in mediation. Indeed these are skills that Puntland cannot afford to lose. House of Ismida (HOI) should be considered. (Isimada) along with their offspring should be educated to the highest standards in matters of law in order for them to review controversial matters and partake in judicial functions that address petitions by the people.
The behaviour of the candidates, their dignity and self restraints are something to appreciate. They have also shown commitment to the common goal, competence and above all expertise that tell us that they can only be of benefit to the people of Puntland.
The old administration also has to be applauded for accepting defeat. I will add that it takes great characters to take criticisms and to apologise for not being able to fulfil promises as you did. I might have been one of your fierce critiques but that was for the sake of the common interest.
And of course our spiritual leader, our king of hearts, our honourable father Abdillahi Yussuf Ahmed. Many of you may not know this, returning to Puntland to ensure that elections run efficiently was something he was pondering for a long time, long before the events that have contributed to his resignation as president of Somalia. It is Puntland’s critical moments that have persuaded him to obey the call of duty towards the region he co founded. It is of a paramount importance that we recognise the role of Yussuf in the struggle to free Somalia from the oppressive military regime. He, along with the members of SDDF, have seen that, we as people, were a cause enough to die for. They had the chance to migrate and put us behind them, instead they have chosen the preservation of our pride. I believe it is time that they have taken their rightful earned place in our history. Our integrity and seemliness as free people should be questioned if we are unable to give credit where is due and we fail to say thank you to those who sacrificed their lives for us.
In conclusion, a new chapter has begun, we have to believe and rely on our selves, no one else will build the dream for us. Meanwhile, we will just have to enjoy the moment while putting our trust in Allah, in our leaders and in each other.
Congratulations to Dr Faroole and to Puntland.
