Somaliweyn elections: Insist on 200 friendly parliamentarians to
bring you to power

Though expected I could not help being dazed by the state of our politics. Really those who have no shame do as they wish. And our shame was there to be broadcasted on an international TV. A place where over 500 wicked men gathered to celebrate something that I seriously am, lost for words to describe. 500 men threw their coats off their shoulders, sacked their tummies and filled their chests with air, crossed their legs seated or roamed around with extreme arrogance. And that fixed annoying senseless grins on their faces which always sheds some doubt over the seriousness of any Somali politician never escaped their faces. Why do they have to giggle in the middle of a serious speech I wondered? New on the scene were clean bearded men in short white dresses that looked out of place but serious.

From Puntland there they were a group of border line outcasts, a blend of criminals, the morally corrupt and petty politicians and a similar group from the neighbouring Somaliland. Every now and then, I was impressed by the throw of rhetoric about nationalism, democracy and the new additions to Somalia’s political dictionary, terms such “cadaalad – justice” “sinnaan – equality” “dawlad loo dhan yahay – a government of unity”. Overtaken by the weight of these terms, it is easy to miss the fact that we have three men who their positions are redundant yet refuse to come down. Instead the Sharif went on to build his own group (the ARS the Djibouti wing) to stay relevant, whilst Nur Cade and Madoobe went against their charter that marks their position void once the president resigns. These terms literarily stood in the heat, naked and over used in dissonance to everything that was going around in that room. Justice while we lined up the men who orchestrated Somalia’s demise. Equality while we had situation dominated by one Somali clan. And democracy while if our own Sharif did not insist on the additional 200 parliamentarians, he would have ended up only with 15 votes that went up to 93 in the second round. Yet I was forced to watch endless counting just to show how fair the whole thing was.
National songs where played and everything was set to blame me, the viewer, for the state of affairs in my country. I, the viewer was implied to have been the criminal who is keeping my country at bay. I was held responsible for the state of our youth inside and outside Somalia, for example for the lack of schooling, health and future outlook. Apparently I somehow deprived the young of also food, shelter and dignity. I was suggested to have caused my own displacement and that of the nation, not to forget the death, rape and destruction that were to be our destiny. I was told that somehow I lacked nationalism if I did not support this circus. I was patted for being disappointed and not being optimistic. How can I be while I know for a fact that as I write this comment piece, the Qatar Somali embassy personnel, for instance are being bullied by someone who identifies himself as Cadde’s cousin, who is telling everyone that they are out of jobs and instead he is to take over, he things that that is only justice. This promises only long rainy days ahead. Furthermore I am urged to stay put for what is to come while the illegal settlements in the Southern regions remain, properties are still occupied, and the few million displaced and refugees stand. To make things worst, I am advised also to forget about the over a million dead otherwise I will be perceived as an obstacle to peace and prosperity.
At the end of a lengthy day, I had this feeling that somehow I ought to say sorry for what happened to me, everything was telling me, I deserved it. Stage one ended, with a great guilt on my shoulders it appears, that I am wrong and they are right. Well done Mr,Oulad Abdullah and congratulations, for delivering democratic elections that is more suited for Mauritania than Somalia. I would stay still and wait to see the ARS leaders committing themselves to the elimination of those young men who died and willing to die for their empty oratory.
