Heesta Saadaal ee 2011
By Dr. Abdirahman D. Beileh
Dec. 31, 2010

Context:

Soomaaliyey, Happy New Year 2011, or is it?

I am certain that many Somali individuals across the globe are looking forward to the celebrations of the New Year, 2011 tonight and tomorrow.  They may have a reason to celebrate. Tomorrow morning, TVs will be showing groups/families strolling around the parks of their new countries trying to show happiness, reminiscing  good old days of the past listening to Mohamed Suleiman and Alla maanta ayaanta iyo iidda wanaagsan…

There is no denying that there are individuals who made it and are genuine in their preparations for a happy new year. But Alas!  For the great majority of this nation, particularly women, children, the old and the disabled, they have nothing to celebrate. For them, the year 2011 has the hallmark of the last 20 years. They have been and continue to be at the mercy of vultures (both human and animal). You have seen last year, the woes expressed by Nadiifo Culusow and her family at the Bakaaraha.  I hope Hanad Yare and Nadiifo had made it. I would never know. God bless them.  Lots of Somalis continue to languish and melt away helplessly in refugee camps, humiliated and abused with no recourse whatsoever. What a shame!!

Folks, we have now been able to establish ourselves around the world as people who:

1.
Have the most beautiful women in the World.

2.
Can, as individuals, be ruthless entrepreneurs and businessmen and businesswomen and can make money with meager resources and humble beginnings.

3.
But as a group and managers of their own collective fate, a bunch of hopeless creatures, losers who enjoy chaos and are exposed to be preyed on by scavengers, both human and animal. I just read in the papers about the case in Holland this last week and the howls of helpless relatives!!

When can we ever have a collective agenda, a common destiny and an open debate where ideas matter on their own merit!! Tell me!  We have shown the world that we simply cannot work together for the common good. Surely a curse!! We cannot do anything substantive together. We can chew chat together and enjoy each other’s company, wasting precious time gossiping and arguing about trivial issues. Just imagine for a moment, if all the mighty Hawaalas got together and formed one single institution! They would have made miracles and put to shame many old and seemingly well known International Financial Institutions in the world. They would have become number one Financial Institution, out of the blue and even taught a lesson or two in the way financial intermediation is done... but, with great regret,  they will not AGREE to come together and listen to reason and move forward in a rational manner … do not get me wrong, Somalis are also known to abide by rules and regulations and get very much in line in respect of the rule of Law… provided that the  ruler is a non Somali.. they will have no problem with a non-Somali whipping them and they will sheepishly obey.. what a curse indeed!! But to another Somali, .. I would welcome to be challenged and proved wrong on these allegations, my fellow Somalis.

So, to keep the long story short, we are a wasted nation. We do not agree on any one single thing on earth. We have now even disagreed on our sacred religion, Islam, and what it all means… maxaa hadhay??.. ma hadhin hadal la’is yidhaahdaa!!.  If there is anything that Somalis agree on, and by default, it is to congregate in the shades of trees or come to the teashops and listen to the BBC in the evenings..But taking a short survey of the listeners soon after the news ends will illustrate the degree of divergence on their interpretation of what the newscaster has just said... … they will all disagree on what was said and what it meant…  Does the level of education among listeners make a difference in their interpretation? Stay tuned!!

Now, the New Year 2011, is on us. Let us all pray to the almighty Allah (SWT) and ask Him just one thing:  to give us the courage to see reason as our guide in moving forward for the good of our people, the SOMALIS..  Enough is enough!
