2005: A year of possibility and Dangers

The way forward is paved with both dangers and great opportunities. Somalia
is the land of all possible things; good and bad. However, lately, and for
almost fifteen years because of an archaic system, the bad has more than
often taken precedence. Somalia came face to face with lowest aspect of
their own humanity. They lost trust and confidence in their neighbors and
among themselves.

Many are starting to think that they cannot achieve any thing real and
concrete without begging outsiders. This is what survival mode does to any
country: it kills the spirit of creativity, but there is still thousands of
Somali's ready to work hard. This is the reason of hope.
Those who though that Siad Barre had to be overthrown by “all means
necessary” now think that after all, he was not much of an evil compared to
the warlords.

In the absence of justice of those who consider themselves victims from
those viewed as perpetrators of crimes the sentiment of deep-seated anger
and hatred accumulated through the ages by one group against another, or the
contempt and resentment that piled up during the most recent years of
national madness, Somalis will find it hard to live with each other in
peace.

Hundreds of Somalis lost to the tsunami yet little is mentioned about their
plight by the news media, perhaps the news media does not realize that
Somalia is bordered by the Indian ocean, perhaps Somalia's suffering is not
as important as those of other people or the west and others are expecting
the Arabs to help Somalia?. One has to wonder where the idea came from that some Somalis want to identify themselves away from the rest of the Black African race and with the Arabs, leaves them vulnerable to being looked over by
other Africans and by blacks around the world for whom unity and pan
Africanism is crucial to global unity and development.

I believe strongly that the problem with us Somali's is not the dreams and
visions that we have for our country. The problem is that we are not sincere
and honest to the country about the things we say and do. No one seems to
care because the problems are so enormous that people are thinking of survival
than anything else nowadays.

Although, Somalis have mixed emotions about the new government because the whole process was weak and the warlords do not trust each other, but they
were pushed and pressured to form a government at all cost. On the other
hand the participation of the warlords eliminates the need for accountability and they are now judges and jurors.

Abdullahi Yusuf has to understand that he should work towards strengthening
the national fabric, rather than protecting the clan base.
