Dr. Hassan, who is a native of Somalia prior to coming to the U.S., was trained in gastroenterology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza.”
There, he co-authored several publications on the impact of viral hepatitis in Somalia. He likewise collaborated with researchers from the Karoliniska Institute in Stockholm
in determining the prevalence and modes of transmission of hepatitis B virus in different population groups in Somalia. The purpose of these studies was to establish the base for an ambitious prevention project.
In the last ten years, the State of Minnesota has attracted a large number of immigrants
from east Africa, the majority of which are Somalis. These new immigrants, in addition to having a high prevalence of both hepatitis B and C, may encounter difficulties navigating this country’s complex health systems. In part, Dr. Hassan joined the University of Minnesota to establish a research project to focus on viral hepatitis and sequela in the Twin Cities’ east African communities. These communities present a special challenge to the practicing
physician, as the hepatitis C genotypes which affect them, their mode of virus
acquisition and their attitudes towards treatment, are different from those of the
general population. Since Dr. Hassan joined the Department of Medicine, the number of patients from these communities seeking treatment at the Hepatology / Transplant Clinic has increased.
Dr. Hassan’s other primary interest is medical education. He is actively involved in the training of fellows, residents, and medical students and participates in core curriculum lectures and other departmental teaching activities. As a new member of the
Department of Medicine, Dr. Hassan looks forward to establishing clinical and
research initiatives with academic peers, students, and the Twin Cities’ Somali community.
