AU says Somali town calm after foiled attack

MOGADISHU, (Xinhua) The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said calm had been restored in Afgoye town, about 30 km south of Mogadishu, after a foiled attack by terror group Al-Shabaab on Tuesday.

AMISOM said its troops have retaken the town which on Tuesday came under fierce fighting between the security forces and Al-Shabaab militants after the latter detonated a car bomb in front of a police station.

“Afgoye is now calm after foiled Al-Shabaab attack on Afgoye police station. People are going about their normal routines,” AMISOM said on Wednesday evening.

At least 11 people, six Somali police officers and six civilians, were killed and 30 others injured during the deadly attack on Tuesday.

Many Al-Shabaab militants were also killed after they stormed into the police station to engage the security officers in exchanges of gunfire.

AMISOM said Somali police officers held off the Al-Shabaab attack until government military and AMISOM troops reinforcements swiftly arrived in the town.

Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaida affiliated group that has vowed to disrupt the elections, has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had killed more than 35 soldiers.
