Case of Somali shop owner accused of killing Soweto boy delayed

South Africa – The trial of a foreign shop owner was delayed in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday due to the unavailability of a Somali interpreter.

Magistrate Herman Badenhorst said the matter would stand down until the interpreter arrived.

There was confusion over the man’s name. Last week he was identified in court as Senosi Yusuf. Prosecutor Simphiwe Mthethwa identified him as Alodixashi Sheik Yusuf in his court papers.

He is accused of fatally shooting Siphiwe Mahori, 14, in Snake Park, Soweto, last week. He allegedly fired at a group of people trying to rob his shop.

Members of the police’s tactical task team were in the courtroom.

The shooting sparked a wave of looting of foreign-owned shops, which spread from Soweto to Kagiso on the West Rand and Sebokeng in the Vaal.

Thirty alleged looters were due to appear in the same court on Monday. They face charges including possession of stolen goods and public violence.
