The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has raised a red flag over what it terms as counterfeit drugs flooding into the country.

The society president Dr. Paul Mwaniki says the Kenya Pharmaceutical and Poisons Board is doing little to put an end to the situation and wants the Ministry of Health in conjunction with relevant agencies to embark on cleanup process to save lives of hundreds of thousands of Kenyans.

The country has on several occasions been treated to numerous cases of misdiagnosis and subsequent wrong treatment with adverse effects on victims.

Addressing the press at  a Nairobi hotel Dr. Mwaniki said fake drugs are making way into the country daily and it was the high time the Kenya Pharmaceutical and Poisons board and other relevant agencies step up regulation process to save the lives of patients.

Mwaniki further said over 40% of pharmacies and chemists in the country are not only stocked with fake drugs but also unqualified personnel who end up giving wrong prescriptions.

And it is for this reason the society is embarking on a campaign to sensitize the public and have all certified chemists and pharmacies labeled to enable patients to make informed decision.
