Ethiopia and Kenya Should Move to Implement Economic Integration Agreements

Addis Ababa- Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia says that Ethiopia and Kenya need to implement the economic integration agreements they have signed at various times as soon as possible. In an interview with the Ethiopian News Agency, Ambassador Catherine Mwangi said the two nations should realize the Special Status Agreement signed in 2012 as well as agreements signed on trade, investment, food security and infrastructure building as well as other areas.

Ambassador Mwangi said Kenya was committed to implementing these agreements to solidify the economic links of the two countries. Ethiopia’s stance was the same as that of Kenya, she said , and the continuous consultations between officials would make a positive contribution to the realization of the agreements. The Ambassador noted that improved infrastructure and transport links would further consolidate people-to-people and trade exchanges.

She said the tarmac road to connect Addis Ababa, Moyale, Nairobi, and Mombasa had been completed on the Ethiopian side and on the Kenyan side of the border another large section would be finalized by May. Ambassador Mwangi noted that Kenya and Ethiopia were collaborating to curb human trafficking and illegal trade, and she also underlined their contributions to peacekeeping, as well as building a green economy.

Ambassador Mwangi admired the coordinated efforts of the Government of Ethiopia and the people in building the Great Ethiopia Renaissance Dam which, she said, would not only benefit Ethiopia but also other countries in the region.
