Kenyan Olympic team stranded in Rio

By WILLIAM MWANGI

A section of the Kenyan team is stranded in Rio de Janeiro after they were allegedly kicked out of the Olympics village which closed its doors on Wednesday.

This is the latest of the team’s suffering amid threats of the Zika virus, amid claims of mismanagement by national olympic committee of Kenya (NOCK) officials.

The team has continued to stay in Brazil days after the world athletics and sports event ended.

Among those stranded is Cherangany MP and Rio Team Kenya captain Wesley Korir .

They complained of being moved to an inhabitable hotel on Wednesday night, a day before their scheduled flight back home.

“This is unbelievable. This is where the rest of the Kenyan team will spend their night today, after the Olympic village is closed,” a tweet by Korir read.

According to Korir, the rooms in the hotel are dirty and heavily infested with mosquitoes – probably laden with Zika parasites.

The MP is heard in the clip refusing to disembark from a bus because of the conditions.

Some Kenyan athletes who were in Rio decided to sneak back home in protest against the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) officials.

The Kenyan team’s challenges have been in the media, starting with world javelin champion Julius Yego missing his flight following a ticket mishap.

Two managers were also sent back home over doping allegations.
