The Government of Puntland condemns the unwarranted escalation of aggression, which has been incubated and catalysed by elements within the Federal Government of Somalia. The protection of civilians and property is the paramount objective of Puntland state and to minimize casualties; to this endeavour we welcome any peaceful resolutions and a cessation of hostilities.
The Government of Puntland is in possession of ample evidence that show the Somali National Army was misused and engaged to attack Puntland forces. Additionally, hardware donated by our International partners including trucks and other apparatuses are being used directly to destabilise Mudug region.
These occurrences in Lower Shabelle and now Mudug are part of a wider disturbing strategy to destabilise the country in order to delay the 2016 electoral process, by seeking an indefinite delay or extension to the government’s term using the argument that the security situation in the country is deteriorating. It is unbecoming of a national government to fuel and stoke hostilities between its citizens for short-term political agenda. A wiser leadership that’s inclusive and impartial, in line with the Vision 2016 objectives is required in the country going forward.
The Government of Puntland as always remains committed to the stability, peace and security of the region. On the other hand, should the situation continue to deteriorate, the Federal Government will be held responsible for fuelling the flames of conflict and mistrust between the peaceful inhabitants of the Mudug region.
