Racist ripped off Muslim woman’s veil at Lidl after hate-filled rant

Court: Glasgow Sheriff Court heard the case
Racist: Man pleads guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to pulling Muslim woman’s veil off.

A racist ripped off a Muslim woman’s religious veil after she left a supermarket.

Emiliano Sanchez confronted Shirin Akter in Glasgow’s east end and yelled in her face before pulling off her veil.

Sanchez pulled off Ms Akter’s niqab before shouting at a worker at the Lidl shop in Dennistoun.

He said to her: “Why are you wearing this? This is not the Qur’an and is not allowed in this country.”

Sanchez then told the shop worker: “Did you see that p**i? I told her to take that thing off her head.”

The 59-year-old appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court where he admitted harassing Ms Akter and acting in a racially aggravated manner.

His lawyer said he was “of a generation, who don’t quite appreciate the consequences of these actions”.

The Spaniard had faced jail but was instead ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work as punishment.

The court heard how Ms Akter had gone to the Lidl store in the city’s Duke Street last November 25.

As she later left, the woman suddenly noticed Sanchez in front of her who hurled a tirade of abuse.

Prosecutor Scot Dignan went on: “He then lifted his hand and pulled the niqab forcibly from her head. She was upset considering the religious implications.”

Ms Akter was still near the store when Sanchez left and Mr Dignan told how she “bravely chose to follow” the racist but he eventually got away.

Police were alerted, but initially Sanchez could not be traced.

However, his wife was later in the same Lidl shop and the worker, who Sanchez spoke to after the niqab incident, managed to get from her where they lived.

This information was passed to police and Sanchez was detained at his flat in the nearby Drygate area.

Sanchez’s lawyer on Friday described the incident as “appalling” and that what happened was an “assault to the dignity” of Ms Akter.

Kevin McCarron, defending, went on: “He has never behaved like this before – he just seems to have lost it.

“He was born in Spain and his English is not great. He is of a generation, who don’t quite appreciate the consequences of these actions.

“There is not a pattern of this type of behaviour. I also suspect him and the lady involved have passed each other daily in that shop without incident.”

Sheriff Alayne Swanson said the offence was “serious enough” to merit jail.

She instead imposed a community payback order which involves Sanchez carrying out 250 hours of unpaid work.

Sanchez was also made the subject of a non harassment order, which means he cannot approach or contact Ms Akter within the next 12 months.
