A picture of a Muslim woman comforting an elderly lady who had fallen on a bus has touched the hearts of thousands of social media users.

The woman wearing a niqab, meaning only her eyes are visible, is seen kneeling beside the elderly lady while holding her hand.

Social media users have said the image, taken on a London bus, proves Britain will defeat terrorist-inspired hate.

The post has been shared more than 34,000 times since it was shared yesterday by a Facebook user called Hamza Young Boss.

One wrote: “People need to realise that the terrorists are not Muslim.”

There has been a huge rise in hate crimes following the London Bridge terrorist attack, with a large amount of the attacks in the street directed at British Muslims.

Hamza was travelling on a bus from Ilford to Barking when the elderly woman fell and became stuck near the doors.

Her head had become wedged between and metal pole and the door frame, leaving her lying on her back on the bus floor.

Hamza posted the image to Facebook with the caption: “An 84-year-old lady just got her head stuck between the door and metal pole on El1 bus from Ilford to Barking.

“The Muslim lady holding her hand supported her for 20 minutes until the ambulance arrived. This is the real Islam.”

The post has since been liked 29,000 times with over 34,000 shares.

Facebook users have been quick to praise her actions.

Bethany Roberts commented: “Love this. People need to realise that the terrorists are not Muslim. Real Muslims are actually such a lovely community of people.”

Jordan Mortlock wrote: “Lovely. Love it when a community can come together as one.”

Hanah (CORR) Uchiki responded by writing: “God bless their souls.”

Whilst Dee Gibson added: “Beautiful.”

Figures released by the mayor of London Sadiq Khan have shown a large increase in Islamophobia since the London Bridge attack on Saturday.

There has been a 40% increase in racist incident compared with the daily average and the increase in Islamophobic incidents is greater than it was after the 2015 Paris attacks.

Recorded hate crime is up to 54 incidents a day versus a daily average of 38 for 2017 whilst recorded crime with an anti-Muslim motive reached 20 whilst the daily average was under four.
