Trump’s Victory: What should be a Muslim’s response?

By Abubakar N. Kasim

The entire human population is trying to make sense out of the Trump’s election victory. Pollsters, experts and political observers were all caught off guard.

Minorities in particular are receiving this news with apprehension. The atmosphere is similar to when a group of terrified animals receive a warning of imminent danger: a predator on the loose trying to give them a surprising visit.

A believer, however, never loses hope as he knows well that Allah almighty is still in charge. Whatever happens is by His will. While we might perceive something negatively, it could be better for us in the long run. Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him said something remarkable about the believer’s conviction.

“Amazing is the affair of the believer, verily all of his affair is good and this is not for no one except the believer. If something of good/happiness befalls him he is grateful and that is good for him. If something of harm befalls him he is patient and that is good for him”

A strong believer always tries to make the best of the situations even if all odds are against him as he turns a lemon into lemonade.   Perhaps this is a wakeup call for Muslims to do self-refection. We should take this opportunity to figure out why we are in the pathetic situations we are in.

We have abandoned every noble principle of our beautiful religion; we don’t like one another and fight among ourselves over trivial matters; Tribalism has dominated our minds; each group considers fellow believers to be bound to hellfire; even those who are in the same group don’t get along well. We treat each other with suspicion and contempt; we don’t show mercy to one another.  We made the religion look repulsive and abhorrent.

I cannot imagine how disappointed and discouraged our prophet might be in us.  While he told us to do one thing, we do the opposite.  The only thing Islamic that is left in us are the symbols and names but the rooh, the spirit of the religion has disappeared. We are like empty vessels – like a beautiful luxury car but without an engine.

According to a great prophetic wisdom, we get the leader we deserve. If we are bad, we get a worse leader to rule us as our leader is a reflection of us, of who are we. Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise not only for Muslims, but for all humanity to come together and work for the betterment of human cause.

It should be a wake up call for the career politicians who have been manipulative, liars and deceptive. The masses have lost trust in politicians. There is a big gap between the public and the politicians as politicians only look after represents  1% of the population and ignore the rest. They support ruthless dictators around the world, bomb innocent people throughout the planet and don’t act as honest broker.   How are many years have we been witnessing our leaders promising to establish peace in the Middle East. They would have been able to establish peace have they been truthful and honest with themselves.

We don’t appreciate what we have until we lose it. Trump is probably sent to us to appreciate each other and to embrace one another. Other countries get a ruthless leader for decades. People don’t get an easy way out to get rid of him unless the entire country turns into a bloodbath. But here in the west, we are blessed to have a system where we can throw them out of the cliff during the election.

The outcome of this election should be an opportunity for reflection, soul searching and deep thinking not only for Muslims but for the entire humanity.

Mr. Trump should be reminded about the fate of ruthless dictators in history. He should humble himself as no matter tall he think he is, he can  never reach the sky and no matter how much money he has, he can never bribe the angel of death.  His days in office will soon come to an end. No need to look at other people with contempt and disdain as we are all created from dust and to dust we shall return.
