Turkish firm to manage Mogadishu harbour

A company from Turkey has taken over the management of Somalia’s biggest harbour in Mogadishu.

The company, Al-Bayrak, is expected to improve the running and infrastructure of the port, according to government officials.

Somali Minister of Ports and Marine Transport Yusuf Moalim Amin expressed confidence that the company will rehabilitate the port to meet international standards.

“Once rehabilitated, the harbour will accommodate larger vessels,” said Minister Amin.

The Chairman of Somalia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mohamoud Abdikarim Gabayre stated that traders and business people trust that the new management will improve the dynamics of the harbour.

“Al-Bayrak is expected to modernise the port and the services it offers,” said Mr Gabayre.

He added, “Well managed harbour will certainly boost the government’s revenue, benefiting the general populace.”

The running of the port was handed over to the company in a ceremony held on Sunday.
