A Somali man has appeared in court, charged with the murder of pregnant mother, Amal Abdi.

In a hearing which lasted less than ten minutes, Abdi Rashsid Khadar, 21, of no fixed abode, gave no plea at Bristol Magistrates court this morning.

Amal, 21, died of stab wounds after police found her in a seventh floor flat in Longlands House in Barton Hill on Sunday.

A mother of one, Avon and Somerset Police revealed she was four months pregnant with her second child.

Flanked by two police officers, Khadar wore a baggy, grey t-shirt, and grey three-quarter-length trousers in the dock, while an interpreter translated the questions posed by the three magistrates.

Looking tired and unshaven, his hair was braided in to a small plat.

The lead magistrate said: “As this is an indictable only offence, I am sending the case straight to crown court.”

Khadar, who was represented by Giles Nelson of Nelson Legal, was hand cuffed and led from the dock.

He was not granted bail.

Eight men and one woman sat in the gallery and towards the end of the hearing four more women came in.

Khadar will appear at Bristol Crown Court on Monday for a bail hearing, and a further preliminary hearing will take place on August 27.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) was represented by Andrea Edwards.
