A Muslim family was allegedly subjected to an ‘intentional act of religious bigotry’, with an advocacy group claiming a McDonald’s worker hid bacon in the family’s chicken sandwiches on purpose.
The family, who is from New York but has not been named or spoken about the incident, visited the Point Mallard Water Park in Decatur, Alabama, on Monday when they found pieces of bacon inside of the 14 McChicken sandwiches ordered.
McDonald’s was quick to deny the claim after being contacted by DailyMail.com, with a representative of the local restaurant saying it was not an ‘intentional act’.
The representative also did not apologize for the incident, but said an investigation was underway.
Earlier, a Muslim-advocacy group claimed the bacon was placed in the sandwiches on purpose as an attack on the family’s religious beliefs.
A Muslim family has been the subject of ‘an intentional act of religious and ethnic bigotry’ after a McDonald’s worker tried to trick them into eating bacon by hiding it inside sandwiches
‘They ordered 14 sandwiches. They started noticing it tasted different to them,’ Khaula Hadeed, head of the Alabama chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told Alabama.com on Tuesday.
‘They eat McChicken all the time at McDonald’s. They knew what they ordered – they know what’s in the sandwich.’
CAIR published a video on its YouTube page showing one of the family members going through all the sandwiches to find pieces of bacon.
In some cases the bacon was hidden under lettuce, in a serving of mayonnaise, or pushed into the underside of the bun.
The video, which appeared to have originally been shared on Snapchat, included the caption: ‘Bacon in all our sandwiches…’
Hadeed then told Alabama.com: ‘It doesn’t sound like a mistake, especially on 14 sandwiches.’
She the family is ‘essentially disturbed’ about what they say happened, and one of the adults even threw up as a result of the incident.
The CAIR-Alabama spokeswoman called on McDonald’s to review footage from its store on Monday to figure out which worker or workers put the bacon in the sandwiches.
Hadeed added the person or people responsible should be fired immediately.
A representative of the local restaurant released a statement to DailyMail.com, saying the incident was not caused by a ‘intentional act’.
‘We want to assure our customers that this was not an intentional act by our employees,’ the statement read.
‘We value every customer and strive to ensure all orders are accurately prepared and served. We are looking into the matter to understand what happened.’
