On foot from Rwanda via DRC to the cricket pitches in Cape Town – Emmanuel Sebareme’s journey has been quite something

By Antoinette Muller

Remember the name Emmanuel Sebareme because you’ll hear it often in the future. The 19-year old cricketer is a refugee from Rwanda, who arrived in South Africa when he was five years old. His parents had fled the war-torn country  five years earlier, making most of of their journey on foot. Sebareme was born during the trek, in the DRC, but has now found an unlikely career.

This 19-year old, who will play for Western Province during the Africa T20 Cup, has had the most remarkable journey.

The 19-year old started playing cricket on the streets of Retreat as a youngster and before too long, he joined a local cricket club. By accident, he started bowling spin and he happened to be quite good at it. Soon, he was in the South African schools team and not long after the selectors at Newlands had come calling.

The University of the Western Cape Student – who is studying economics on a full bursary – will get the chance to show the world what he’s made of when he plays for Western Province during the Africa T20 Cup scheduled to take place in South Africa in September. The competition will see South Africa’s provincial sides take on Namibia Zimbabwe and Kenya.

Sebareme doesn’t quite believe how far he has come just yet, but he does hope his story will inspire others saying: If you work hard, you will get your rewards.
